When you start at level 1, you would most enjoy melee characters because it is very difficult to survive as a low level spell caster. But do not let that stop you. Take the pain and suffering as it is crucial that you get the magic and hold on for dear life. At higher levels your party will start to depend on you heavily to save the day and you will be the hero.
You see that massive army headed your way...that your party will never be able to handle? Yea...lets go spell caster. "Project Image", allows you to create and image of yourself and it runs out into the army and cannot be harmed by any physical attacks because its simply an image. "Wail of the banshee", your image can cast spells for you and casts this twice while it is in the middle of the enemy army. EVERY enemy has to roll a very high save or they are simply dead. Your party can now handle the largely reduced army. YOU ARE THE HERO

[glow=green,2,300]The greatest part about being that one high lvl spell caster is the random crap that you're allowed to pull out of your ass. For instance, said giant army headed your way and you cast invisibility, then fly above the army, cast enlarge person, and polymorph into an oversized whale...congrats you have now created an enemy pancake courtesy of the poor shmucks you land on.[/glow]

Very good support to my argument, Hauru. Thank you for helping display that magic is broken, no matter how hard the game creator tried to balance the game.
