Most gamers play on computers or video gaming systems. TIER, however, is like a board game. It takes place at a table with friends and/or family. One person is named the Game Master. This person is like a story teller. The Game Master creates a fictional story for everyone else to follow. Everyone else playing the game is called a player. Each player creates a fictional character that they use throughout the story. This character can have a variety of powers, skills, and abilities.
While playing the game, the players and Game Master roll dice with 20 sides. You may wonder "why do you need 20-sided dice?". This special dice is used to create chance and decide what happens in the game. Any time you take an action, make a decision, or do anything with your character, you are required to roll the 20-sided dice. Different events or outcomes may occur depending on how high or low your dice roll is. Read the fictional stories below for examples of how dice rolls may alter gameplay.
Fictional story #1: You walk into a bar. You decide to get into a bar fight. You walk up to a man and try to attack him. You roll the 20-sided dice and score a "17". This is considered a hit and you kill the man.
Fictional story #2: You walk into a bar. You decide to get into a bar fight. You walk up to a man and try to attack him. You roll the 20-sided dice and score a "5". This is considered a miss. Then the man tries to attack you with a beer bottle. The Game Master rolls the 20-sided dice and scores a "19". This is considered a hit and you fall unconscious.
If you look at both of the fictional stories, they are similar except for the dice rolls. Different dice rolls may alter the entire game and story. The point of this game is to play using your fictional characters and survive the entire story. As you play, you gain experience points which allow you to level-up and gain new powers, skills, and abilities. The more you play, the stronger your character will become. When your character becomes stronger, you will gain bonuses that are added to your dice rolls. These bonuses will make it easier to do what you want to do. For example: if you try to attack a man and roll a "5", you may have bonuses that add to the dice roll in order to make it a hit instead of a miss.
You can create many different fictional characters in order to try out different ideas and strategies. This is why the game has over 100 different Masteries. As you level-up, you gain access to Masteries which completely alter your character. Some Masteries may increase your offense and attacks while others may increase your defense or magic abilities.
In the game of TIER, you can be anything and do anything. You can create an earth elemental with the ability to cause earthquakes. You can create an alien capable of crafting magic items. You can create a half-dragon who can breathe fire and swing a giant sword through armies of bad guys. You can create a sweet, innocent-looking fairy who uses mind-control powers. Anything is possible in the world of TIER if you have a vast imagination.
