Each of our current players will undergo a personal quest that occurs in the past, before they joined the party. These background quests will explain why these characters left their hometowns to go adventuring. Our first character is Bagoro, the Goron warrior.
Bagoro lived in Goron City, but he was a terrible worker. He just wasn't able to handle the daily routines of a typical Goron. He was certainly strong enough, but never learned how to work as efficiently as other Gorons. His best friend, Jagoro, often helped Bagoro with his duties and they stayed out of trouble. But even with the extra help, Bagoro felt out of place.
One night, the best Goron workers were sumo-wrestling for fun. Bagoro wasn't allowed to fight, but he intimidated other Gorons and forced his way into the ring. He challenged a tough opponent and lost. Feeling bitter and sad, he wandered off for a bit.
Bagoro heard noises and footsteps. He chased them around for a while, but found nobody and made his way back to the Gorons. A few were sick on the floor and the rocks were transforming into evil darkness! The Gorons who ate the dark rocks were sickened! Bigoron, the Goron chief, sent Bagoro to investigate.
Bagoro found a sneaky wizard and two archers. The wizard summoned earth elementals to attack Bagoro while the archers kept disabling his arms and legs. Eventually, the wizard cast magic that drained most of Bagoro's strength! Luckily, a Hylian girl appeared, flying around and zapping enemies with electricity spells. Bagoro's best friend, Jagoro, also came to help towards the end of battle.
Bagoro returned to Goron City and Bigoron congratulated him on his success in saving the Gorons. He also told Bagoro to explore the world so he could become stronger and obtain valuable knowledge. When Bagoro finishes his journey, he will return to Goron City as a hero.

Remi, the Kokiri earth spell caster, had a funny background story with a strange twist. Remi was the only kokiri without a fairy. He never got along well with other Kokiri because of this. As a result, he was often an outcast who did things alone and got into trouble.
One day he tried to create something new to impress the Kokiri; blueberry pancakes. He went into the forest, looking for ingredients and fighting enemies along the way. He found sugar cane and wheat; now he needed blueberries. He found some quickly, but a troll was eating them. He decided to cast magic and make the blueberry bushes huge! Unfortunately, this attracted 4 more trolls. Remi foolishly attacked all of the trolls. Then they attacked him. He barely escaped with his life.
Eventually, Remi met another Kokiri in the forest. He gave Remi a big beautiful blueberry. Remi returned to the village and found a chef willing to help make pancakes. The chef wasn't sure whether or not the blueberry was genuine due to it's large size, but Remi was 100% sure, or so he thought. The pancakes were ready by morning, but Remi tried them first to be safe. He died that day. That was no ordinary blueberry; it was cursed by the Kokiri that gave it to him.
Remi woke up one month later in a fairy fountain, surrounded by many faeries who were very surprised. Normally a person must be revived within 1 day of death. Since Remi awoke a month later, it was a miracle. The faeries told him to never return to the Kokiri village because they considered him a criminal who attempted to kill the Kokiri. With no other choice, Remi ventured to the nearest safe place; Valoo village.

Ryan, a D&D and TIER veteran player, has joined our Zelda campaign. He's playing a mercenary named Stranglethorn. His story began in Hyrule. Stranglethorn and a female mercenary named Charlotte went looking for a bounty near Valoo village. They never got there, but instead fought lots of monsters and bandits along the way. They bonded and even made love one night during their adventure. Then they returned to Hyrule and received an important quest from Zelda! Normally she would never hire mercenaries, but her city guards cannot leave Hyrule unprotected. The quest was to go help Valoo village, which was going to be attacked very soon by armies of moblins.
Stranglethorn and Charlotte ventured to Valoo village, but did not make it in time to help. The temple guardian told them to follow our group through the caves and to help us as best as possible. Along the way, Stranglethorn and Charlotte accidentally time travel 20 years into the future! This is how they eventually meet up with our group.
As Keela, I also got to play through my background story. One day, my parents' general store was robbed! Bandits stole expensive jewelry and clothing. I went to the temple to ask for help and they let me borrow an archer named Frank. Together we ventured into the mountains while following the fresh tracks of the bandits. We avoided most dangers, but found a cave with hibernating bears and dead bodies with jewelry! I managed to take some jewelry, but then the bears woke up and we quickly flew out of there with my magic.
After hours of traveling quietly up the mountain, we finally reached the top and found the bandits. I caught them by surprise and burned their camp down with electricity magic. The fight got dangerous as there were 5 strong bandits using swords, pistols, crossbows, and magic. Frank almost died, but I protected him and the bandits took that opportunity to run away. We killed 2 out of 5 and retrieved enough jewelry and goods to make up for my parents' loss. My parents were grateful, but some of the bandits and their leader escaped. Hopefully they'll leave us alone.

As a group, we experienced a background quest together. Before traveling 20 years into the future, the Great Fairy, whom we found in the cave, told us to go back to Valoo village. She wanted us take care of all wants and needs before continuing on our adventure.
We revisited Valoo village and I spent time with my parents and best friend Fayor. The rest of the group ran into shenanigans at the local pub. Casimous got super drunk and fell unconscious for 30 minutes. They also helped rebuild the village since it was recently attacked by moblin armies. Remi cast plant magic and enlarged all the fruits and vegetables to provide more food for the village.
Afterward, we all spoke with Fayor and her farmer friend. It was a middle-aged woman who needed our help. She asked us to retrieve her stolen golden egg! This sounded interesting, so we agreed to get it back. We investigated the crime scene, found footprints, and followed them for 6 hours to a mountain entrance.
The entrance was heavily guarded by bandits and we got ambushed; arrows and bolts hit us from all directions. We found all the bandits except an invisible sniper. It took quicksand and other tricks to eventually kill him. We picked up some decent loot and entered the cave. The cave was like a dungeon, full of traps and more bandits! We fought our way through and made it to the final room.
The final room was very large, with a throne at the end and numerous bandits disguised as monks. Their leader was Michael Jackson, a flashy and talkative man who was very passionate about his new golden egg. We tried negotiating for it, but he said it was a work of art! He stole it because he was afraid the farmers would sell it off for money. He believed the golden egg should be appreciated for its incredible beauty. I honestly agreed with him. I love art and beauty, but stealing it was wrong.
The battle was wild with Michael Jackson dancing around and punching/kicking everyone. He was almost impossible to hit because he kept dancing to avoid our attacks. He also clapped his hands and confetti strings fell down from the roof. While fighting, he began pulling strings and activating traps to kill us. Meanwhile, his fellow bandits kept attacking us up-close and from a distance. Remi kept many of them entangled and preoccupied, but it was a tough battle. Casimous got surrounded and almost died.
While casting spells and damaging bandits, I accidentally made Remi sick and disabled him. However, I also disabled many bandits and Michael Jackson danced away! Luckily he threw the golden egg into the air before he left and we caught it. We gathered loot from the bandits' corpses, teleported back to Valoo village, returned the golden egg to the farmers, and ventured back to the Great Fairy.

During our two months of training and helping Haven, a group quest arose. Stranglethorn was asked by the academy to obtain information and mementos from the abandoned Skyward city. Remi, Stranglethorn, and I went up there through a portal. We tried our best to sneak around and avoid combat, but those black shadow creatures from the Twilight occasionally found us. They were really creepy because they would fly through our bodies and suck out our life energy. We fought, ran, made distractions, and did everything possible to end battles quickly and get the mission done.
We entered a library, the marketplace, and the housing district. Mostly everything was taken when the city was evacuated. However, we did find a book, a suitcase, and a doll. We also found recording devices throughout the city. These devices were planted by the Skyward knights to use as surveillance. Luckily, Stranglethorn is really good at disabling devices. He safely removed a few devices and we brought everything we found back to Haven.
The captain of the Skyward knights thanked us for our service. A little girl and her parents were there too. We handed her the doll and she was very happy. This moment made all of our hard work in Haven worth it. I smiled like never before. I felt a rush of positive energy surge through me. I felt like my old self again, like I used to feel in Valoo village. This feeling of happiness and success, hope. I will never give up this feeling ever again.

Back to the far past, before the group members knew each other, Casimous finally got his background quest!
Casimous was born and raised in Hyrule. He worked as a city guard and got himself into trouble one day. He started following a cloaked woman, but eventually lost track of her. Then he felt a feather fall on him and looked up to see a blur of a man flying on a griffin. This was peculiar because nobody else noticed it, not even other guards or civilians. Casimous saw it heading towards the valleys in the far off distance and pursued it.
About an hour later, Casimous spotted three griffins with wizard riders standing on top of the far-off valley. They somehow spotted Casimous and one started blasting fireballs. Luckily the fireballs were off target and barely singed his clothes. A kokiri saw the situation and offered to help him. The kokiri was simply bored and looking for something to do.
They both traveled stealthily through the trees to get closer to the valley. They soon reached the wizards and the battle ensued. Fireballs, rays of enfeeblement, and vicious griffons were slowly killing Casimous and the kokiri. However, they put up one heck of a fight. They killed one griffon and the kokiri cast portal spells that sucked two wizards into the Earth plane! Casimous was alone tanking against all of the enemies while the kokiri was hiding and using sneaky tactics. But all of this was not enough. Casimous and the kokiri were eventually defeated.
Thankfully, a beautiful Hylian girl was nearby and managed to scare off the remaining enemies with her electricity/air magic. She saved the heroes lives by stopping them from bleeding out. Then she teleported them back to Hyrule and they slept while being tended to by nurses. They awoke the next day and the kokiri returned to Valoo village. Casimous, however, received a promotion for his detective work and bravery. Had he not spotted and pursued the wizards, they may have attacked Hyrule or another nearby village.

Casimous helped many people during his two months in Haven. For the first month, he met a branch of novice wizards working for the sky knights. They were terrible. Casimous helped them train by acting as a moving target and firing arrows at the wizards to make the training more realistic. After a month, they became stronger and the branch earned a reputation. Unfortunately, 4 wizards became obsessed with power and betrayed Casimous. They went to the nearby mountains and used telekinesis to throw Casimous over a cliff!
Luckily, I (Keela) was nearby and flew straight to him. I played a healing song with my ocarina and Casimous woke up. But I stopped singing when I saw his spine and neck bone pop into place and his skin was bloody and hot with fire! I panicked for a moment and then finished the healing song. We soon heard screams and I flew us both back to Haven. The 4 crazy wizards were attacking Haven and the sky knight academy! Casimous and I fought them, but I couldn't cast my best spells because there were too many civilians and knights in the area. I went unconscious and Stranglethorn came to the rescue. He helped Casimous defeat the wizards and Illia saved my life. As a result, we were hailed as heroes and Casimous became an official sky knight!
The second month was fun. Casimous and I explored the night life and drank a bit at the bar. I'm a lightweight and got drunk fast, but Casimous was a gentleman and took care of me. We visited the merchant stores, but they weren't ready yet. Casimous spent the rest of the month helping merchants prepare their shops. I never knew much about Casimous before, but after these two months, he proved to be a great guy. I have to make sure nothing bad happens to him nor any of my friends; they all mean so much to me...

Back in time in Valoo village, Remi wasn't very popular. Many people did not like him and he wanted to change his image by doing good deeds. One day he ran into a woman who's caravan was attacked by moblins. They killed her husband and kidnapped her child. Remi investigated the destroyed caravan and took a few hours to track the footprints to a nearby mountain cave. He fought and snuck past multiple monsters before reaching the boss room.
Remi had told the mother to send help, so she found me. Remi and I grew up together in Valoo village. I didn't like him much, but that would never stop me from helping a family. I ventured my way through the cave and found Remi just before he entered the boss room. We cast our best preparation spells and entered the boss room.
There were seven moblins, including their boss, and a very young child (about 7 years old) in the room. The boss wanted ransom money for the child, but Remi quickly refused and threatened the boss, so the battle began. I cast multiple stinking cloud spells and successfully disabled two enemies. Remi created quicksand, a magic portal, and multiple flood spells to harm everyone! It was a hectic battle, especially when the boss successfully pinned me against the wall with his giant spear. I couldn't avoid any attacks, while pinned, and almost died when the boss began pulverizing me! Eventually I escaped and began launching an onslaught of electricity spells.
As the enemies and us became weaker from battle, Remi saw an opportunity for us to escape with the child. However, I refused to let the moblins live. I couldn't let them survive with the chance of hurting more innocent people in the future. I blasted a vicious electricity beam through the boss' chest! He died instantly.
We killed the remaining moblins and teleported back to Valoo village. The mother and people of the village thanked us for our valor and bravery.

Future Keela, 35 years old.
Pain and suffering, feeling worthless. I failed everyone, got them all killed. I lived like a coward, hiding and running away from danger. After 20 years, I finally mustered the courage to go back to that dreadful time and finish what I started. I used the Temple of Time and appeared in the middle of war in Hyrule. Twilight monsters were killing knights, so I did my best to help. I also tried searching for clues, information, anything that might be helpful.
I could not prevent the deaths of my friends due to the risk of altering the timeline again, encountering my younger self, and erasing my own existence. However, I did find Princess Zelda fighting alongside a Twili man and his shadow-like familiar, both of whom I never saw before. They all disappeared, so I continued fighting monsters nearby and waited for their return.
Shortly after, the Twili man and his familiar returned. He was dazed and confused, so I helped him and then asked for his help in return. I teleported us to the Temple of Time and we soon appeared in the future. I saw my younger self fighting against the evil red dragon and realized what I had to do. I had to take responsibility for my actions and sacrifice myself to fix the past.
I approached my younger self and gave everything to her. I gave her my life, soul, and memories. She may feel overwhelmed at first, but she'll learn from my mistakes and fix everything. She'll get it right this time, I just know it. Everything began to fade away, but I knew this was the right thing to do. It was the best decision I'd made in the last 20 years...

Beran: the Twili man, the one I love...
There was some loud ruckus happening in the city of Haven. I flew over and found Beran with his familiar and Zelda scolding him for causing trouble. Beran asked me for a tour of Haven, so we flew around as I explained everything. Afterward, he asked me a few questions and helped jog our memories regarding how we met 17 years ago. He wanted to know more about himself because he doesn't remember his past. He doesn't know how he was born, his purpose, or anything, so we did research in the library.
After an hour of research, we discovered that Beran truly was a Twili person, similar to the scary twilight monsters in Skyward city. The librarian was the first to realize this fact and she fainted. I decided to take Beran to Skyward city and show him the recording devices; so he could see and understand what he is and how he is similar and different from the twilight monsters. We explored Skyward city, fought a bunch of twilight monsters, and found 3 recording devices, 1 nightgown, and 1 book.
Beran took the recording devices to his cottage for closer observation. We gave the nightgown to a Hylian grandmother; she was grateful for it. We donated the book to the library and the librarian thanked us. She also told Beran that she would keep his Twili identity a secret. Beran has such high charisma that nobody thinks he's a Twili or anyway connected to the twilight monsters.
Late in the night, Beran came to my house and knocked on the door. I was wearing my nightgown and about to go to sleep, but he wanted to ask me questions, so I let him in. He asked me all about his past, how I found him, what I fought against, everything...it was painful remembering the past mistakes of my future self. I felt his pain and feared his desires. He wants to find out everything about himself and why he's not like the twilight monsters.
I told Beran to let go of his past and embrace who he is now. He's a great person who can do great things for everyone. He can help so many people with his power and good heart. I don't want Beran to accidentally become like the twilight monsters. They were horrible during the Hyrule war 17 years ago. They brutally killed many knights and devoured their souls.
Beran argued with me. He thought it was more important to discover himself than to be a hero and help others. I tried convincing him to let go of his past, but he disagreed and left. However, he placed a black sunflower and vase on my table before leaving. I looked at the black sunflower and did not understand, so I ran out the door after him.
I asked him what it meant and he said "I am the darkness and you are the light". I ran up to his back, dropped the black sunflower, and wrapped my arms tightly around him. I said "stay and embrace the light". He carefully removed my arms, turned around, picked up the black sunflower, and placed it in my hair. He explained that he's scared of what he might become in the future. He's scared of the uncertainty and doesn't want to hurt me.
I understood everything now. I moved in closer and said "I'm not afraid". Then I kissed him with all my passion and love. We walked back to my home together; I gave him everything. I am now his light, his ray of everlasting hope.

Beran is great, but he let me down tonight. I told him about my previous adventure with Charlotte and the moblins guarding the temple near Valoo village. He promised to help me infiltrate the temple and find out why the moblins are there, but he didn't show up. He ended up staying home to do personal stuff. So, I asked Charlotte again for help and we went together to the temple. We didn't get far, but we did kick the shit out of a few moblins and have a good conversation.
Charlotte had a sad childhood. She wasn't allowed to be a girl. She was raised in the poor and forced to work at a young age. She never had the chance to smell flowers, wear dresses, and be a happy girl. She was born and raised in a world of poor men, forced to live up to the expectations of men. She joined the mercenaries to make more money for her parents, but they eventually died of sickness and crime.
I tried cheering her up, but she got angry at me. I took a chance and decided to fight her. It was random and possibly a bad decision, but it was the only way I thought I could get through to her. I used magic at first, but then I decided to try my best in archery and melee combat. I wanted it to be a fair fight; that was a mistake that nearly cost my life. I didn't stand a chance and she pinned me to the floor. At that point I said, "You're one of the most important and incredible people I know! You've gone through so much, yet you're stronger than most. You're stubborn and driven! But don't you see? You no longer need to fight for money, you now fight for yourself and your beliefs. You fight now because you want to, not because you have to. You are helping an entire city! You're a hero! And you're a great friend.......thank you for all you've done."
I cringed and she punched the earth. She threw me out of the way and continued punching the ground, cursing with anger until she hurt herself. Then she stopped and laid down, catching her breath and fighting away tears. I sat up and looked at her, happy that she finally let out years of bottled up anger and feelings. I took out my ocarina and played my healing song. We both were physically restored, but emotionally unsettled. I gave her a long hug, wrapped my arms around her shoulders and neck. She did not move, but I knew she was happy. A tear fell down her face and onto my arm. She whispered, "Thank you...and not a word to the others, or I'll kill you...". I smiled, she grinned a little, and we both went home, feeling stronger than before.

Charlotte, Beran, and I went on an adventure together to the Plane of Earth. The merchants asked us to retrieve rare metals and minerals that aren't available in our world. I cast Plane Shift and luckily transported us to a safe location in the Plane of Earth. We began digging and mining with pick axes for 3 hours! Beran and I got tired after about an hour, but Charlotte kept hacking away. She eventually discovered a vein of metal the size of a bus!
However, a few earth elementals showed up before we could start digging the metal vein out. They were particularly angry and seemed to be friends with Glenda. They were angry at us for taking Glenda away and for removing minerals from the Plane of Earth. Needless to say, they attacked us with jagged rocks and earth spells. We fought them off and continued digging for the metal vein. Unfortunately, Beran and I were exhausted from the battle. Charlotte, however, kept digging and soon pulled out the entire bus-sized metal vein all by herself! She's gotten much stronger lately and more determined than ever before. It was kind of attractive and interesting in a way. Watching her pull that metal vein out of the ground alone was certainly inspirational.
We returned back to Haven and the merchants graciously thanked us for our work. This quest wasn't too difficult; it was a nice change in pace. It also made me appreciate hard labor and good old-fashioned muscle. Charlotte made Beran and I look like complete wussies. She's come a long way and done so much for Haven. I'm truly proud of her. If she keeps helping Haven, maybe she'll become a council leader or take some form of leadership position in the future.
